Sam Gentry, Our Pastor

Picture
Sam Gentry, our pastor, came to First Baptist in July of 2007.  He has served in churches and in missions since 1973.  Serving with him is his wife Myra.  He met her his first day of seminary.  Whether it is been doing Christian Resort work in California or Christian Social ministries in New Orleans or serving in churches across our nation, they have worked together to reach and serve people for Christ.

Prior to coming to First Baptist Belle Chasse, Sam served at First Baptist Church of Ironton, Missouri.  This is his third time to serve in the New Orleans area.  He first came to New Orleans in 1978 to serve with Myra as US 2 Missionaries at Franklin Avenue Baptist Church.  His second time, he came to pastor First Baptist Church of Raceland, LA., and his third is now with us.  God has given Sam a love for south Louisiana.

He is a native of Shreveport, Louisiana and attended Woodlawn High School and Louisiana College in Pineville. He and his wife graduated from Southern Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky.  They have one grown daughter.  He loves to fish and has pictures to prove it.  He teaches and plays the piano and guitar, and you often hear him sing as part of a morning worship sermon.  He has several favorite verses of scripture.  Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”; Romans 8:18, “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us”; and Hebrews 13:5, “For He Himself has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’”
